Unmerge & Restore

Reverse any merge operation and restore records to their original state.

Overview

True Record captures a complete snapshot of both records before every merge, allowing you to fully restore records even after they've been merged and deleted.

Recreate Records

Restore deleted records with all original field values intact.

Revert Field Changes

Restore winner record fields to their pre-merge values.

Re-reparent Related Records

Move Tasks, Cases, and other related records back to the restored record.

Batch Operations

Unmerge multiple records at once or restore to a specific point in time.

Retention Windows

Each plan has a different retention window during which merges can be reversed. After this window expires, the merge snapshot is deleted and the merge becomes permanent.

Single Unmerge

Unmerge individual records from the Merge History page.

How it works

  1. 1Go to Merge History in your dashboard
  2. 2Find the merge you want to reverse
  3. 3Click the Unmerge button to see a preview
  4. 4Review the preview showing what will be restored
  5. 5Confirm to recreate the deleted record and revert changes
What happens
  • The deleted record is recreated in Salesforce
  • Winner record fields are reverted to pre-merge values
  • Related records (Tasks, Cases, etc.) are moved back
  • The match is updated with the new record ID
Preview first

Always preview an unmerge before executing. The preview shows exactly which fields will change and which related records will be moved.

Batch Unmerge

Business+

Unmerge multiple records at once. Perfect for reversing bulk merge operations.

How it works

  1. 1Go to Merge History and find a bulk operation group
  2. 2Click 'Unmerge All' to reverse the entire operation
  3. 3Or select individual records and click 'Unmerge Selected'
  4. 4Review the confirmation showing how many records will be restored
  5. 5Confirm to process all unmerges

Bulk Operation Groups

When you do a bulk merge, all merged records are grouped together in Merge History. You can expand the group to see individual records or unmerge the entire operation with one click.

Point-in-Time Restore

Business+

Restore your data to a specific point in time by reversing all merges after a selected date.

How it works

  1. 1Click 'Restore to Point' in Merge History
  2. 2Select a date using the calendar or quick shortcuts
  3. 3Preview all merges that occurred after that date
  4. 4Review which merges are eligible (within retention window)
  5. 5Confirm to restore all eligible merges in reverse chronological order

Reverse Chronological Order

Merges are undone from newest to oldest. This ensures proper handling of any dependencies between merges.

Limitations & Edge Cases

Field Reversion Skipped When

  • The field was modified after the merge (current value doesn't match post-merge value)
  • The field is no longer updateable in Salesforce metadata

Related Records Skipped When

  • The related record has been deleted since the merge
  • The parent field was changed to a different record after the merge

Unmerge Not Available When

  • The retention window has expired
  • The winner record has been deleted from Salesforce
  • The unmerge has already been executed for this snapshot

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Revert and Unmerge?

Revert (from Audit Trail) is a simple state restoration. Unmerge (from Merge History) is a full restoration that also handles field reversion on the winner record and re-reparents related records like Tasks and Cases.

Can I unmerge a record that was merged weeks ago?

Yes, as long as it's within your plan's retention window. Free plans have 7 days, Professional has 30 days, Business has 90 days, and Enterprise has unlimited retention.

What happens to new data added to the winner record after the merge?

New data on the winner record is preserved. Only fields that still have the post-merge values are reverted. If a field was modified after the merge, it won't be changed.

Can I unmerge if the winner record was deleted?

No, the winner record must still exist in Salesforce. If it was deleted, you'd need to restore it from Salesforce's Recycle Bin first.
